Little Yeti in Chorlton
We love catching up with business owners we have previously helped to purchase a business. We sold Velbekomme cafe in Chorlton (Manchester) to brother and sister Nanny and Niti Karki who have really established themselves as the go-to place in Chorlton for Nepalese food, especially momos! We caught up with the owners recently to see how they were getting on.
What do you love about being your own boss?
Being my own boss has empowered me to run my own schedule. I love that I am able to direct change in all aspects of my business. I do what I want, when I want… (as long as my sister, who is my business partner, is ok with it). One quote does stick with me and in the words of Uncle Ben from Spiderman ‘with great power, comes great responsibility’. You are ultimately responsible for the work and if you don’t go and open the shutters to let your customers in, they won’t get opened.
What has been the hardest aspect of running your own business?
As this is my first business, the learning curve was very steep. Being a chef, I assumed that cooking and some cleaning would all be required to run a successful business but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Actually running the restaurant is probably about 60% of the total work, there are a myriad of forms, procedures and inevitably taxes that must be organised and managed. Putting 100% of my effort into the restaurant meant that I needed an additional 40% effort for all the bits I didn’t realise I had to do and that was hard in the first few years.
What is your favourite aspect of owning a business in Chorlton?
The customers and the neighbouring business! They are amazing!!! I am and will forever be eternally grateful to every customer who walks into my restaurants. I love talking with them, joking around and getting to know them. Many customers have become good friends. The businesses around me have been so friendly and helpful. If I needed some salad or more till roll, I can always count on them to help me out.
What does the future hold for Little Yeti?
Every day I open the shop and see how well we have done. I am considering opening another branch! I hope that we will have a Yeti in every major city in the UK but I guess we should get our first shop sorted first!
