			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The five leading UK banks have missed their target for lending to smaller companies by £1.1 billion.  The banks blamed the shortfall on fewer firms coming forward for credit and a spokesman for the banks said demand for credit from small companies fell last year and &#8216;remained weak&#8217;.</p>
<p>£74.9 billion the banks lent to small and medium sized businesses last year compares to £66 billion in 2010.</p>
<p>The chairman of the National Federation of Small Businesses describes the failure to hit the target as &#8216;extremely disappointing&#8217; and added &#8216;it is even more disappointing given that the targets were set artificially low in the first place&#8217;.</p>
